Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest
 | | Charles "Tommy" Dever of Monterey won first place in the Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest for the Boston region (which covers the East Coast) May 12 for his strong ale. The judge, J. Anthony Wilson, said Dever's ale was sweet, vinous and malty for flavor. It was Dever's English Barley wine, though, that got judge Ben Low excited. He wrote, "Wow, big alcohol and malt, strong sherry-like flavors, and good bitterness balances." Perhaps the most important comment Low made was, "I would pay money for this beer." Both entries scored in the excellent range, exemplifying style well while requiring only minor tuning. The American Homebrewers Association and the Beer Judge Certification Program sanctioned the contest. For Dever, his victory is proof that he is on to something good. So it's back to the drawing board to make improvements to his beers to bring them up to world-class standards. (Recorder photo by James Jacenich) |
