| CLIFTON FORGE - A sunny day greeted guests two weeks ago at the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation's scholarship fundraiser, "Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch- An Afternoon in Tuscany," held on the college's Clifton Forge campus.
Over 200 supporters from the college's service area- Alleghany, Bath, northern Botetourt, and Rockbridge counties, and the cities of Buena Vista, Covington and Lexington- attended the event, which raised more than $18,000 for the educational foundation's Lancaster Scholarship Program.
Lancaster scholarships are not funded by endowments or annual gifts and, although some are awarded to first-time DSLCC students, most are awarded to students who have completed at least one full year at DSLCC and plan to return to complete their program of study.
"This is the fourth 'Bubbles, Bands and Brunch" fund-raiser held by the Educational Foundation and the event has become a hit with area residents who support the educational foundation's mission," said educational foundation president David Newkirk. "The strong turnout, as well as the many corporate sponsorships, demonstrate the community support for the primary goal of the foundation- scholarships for area students. The college's beautiful campus is the perfect setting for such a cultural event, and we hope there will be many more such occasions."

| According to foundation director Lynda Thompson the number of Lancaster Scholarships awarded with proceeds from the fund-raiser has increased each year. "Proceeds from the 2005 'Bubbles' allowed us to fund a total of 14 Lancaster scholarships for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years, which is quite an increase over the three funded from 'Bubbles' 2003," Thompson said. "We truly are indebted to the many businesses who underwrote expenses by serving as corporate sponsors, individuals or businesses who made monetary or inkind donations and, of course, the many people who purchased tickets." Thompson was assisted in the preparations for the event by board members Donna Beirne, Anne Brugh, Nancy Caperton, Joyce Edwards, and Helen Kostel.
Guests were welcomed by college president, Dr. Richard Teaff, who recognized Sen. and Mrs. Creigh Deeds, Del. and Mrs. Jim Shuler, and Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement for the Virginia Community College System, Jennifer Gentry. Teaff introduced Newkirk, who extended special thanks to those in attendance for their support of the Foundation's scholarship programs. Newkirk also recognized foundation board members and acknowledged special projects committee chairman Matt Paxton, and committee members Donna Beirne, Anne Brugh, Richard Crowder, Nancy Caperton, Joyce Edwards, Jim Eller, H. C. Rhodes, and Bill Wilson, whose efforts made "An Afternoon in Tuscany" possible.
Dr. George Edwards and Dr. Jay Kain conducted a lively auction of donated items. An 8' X 10'area rug donated by Bacova Guild, LTD was purchased by Paxton, of Lexington. Paxton also purchased one of two floral arrangements donated by Country Garden Florist of Clifton Forge. Rounds of golf for two with cart at the Homestead 1766 Old Course or Lower Cascades Course were purchased by Bill Caperton and Jerry Clark.
The Greenbrier donated a "Winter Weekend" at the resort, which was won by Wanda Warlitner, and Sandra Lewis was the winner of a $50 gift certificate to Caf Michel in Lexington. Elaine Nelson, of Lexington and Charles Kahle of Clifton Forge were the winners of flower arrangements donated by The Jefferson Florist of Lexington and the Little Clay Pot of Covington.
In addition to Warren & Teenie Kegley, owners of B.A. Rupert Real Estate, Inc., of Covington, who sponsored the Tuscan feast prepared by Schall's Catering and Events, Teaff expressed appreciation to businesses who helped to underwrite expenses for the event.
