Boys' Home Christmas Tree finds success at competition

COVINGTON - On Friday, Aug. 24 an eight food White Pine entered the Boys' Home Christmas Tree farm took second place in the all pines class and earned the distinction of the second best White Pine in the state of Virginia.

The contest, sponsored by the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers convention, was held at Natural Bridge. In addition to the pine tree class, there were contests for firs, spruces, and other species.

Staff members at Boys' Home, Inc. are proud of the success for this tree. They are especially proud of the fact that their Christmas Tree held its own against the eventual grand champion of the competition. The purpose of the event held by the Virginia Christmas Tree Grower's Association was to encourage and raise the awareness in the use of real Christmas trees. Another important component of this contest was that the grand champion would be able to present a real Christmas tree to the governor of Virginia as well.

The Boys' Home Christmas Tree Farm is located in West Augusta.

The farm is a teaching and learning center and the boys participate in all aspects of caring for and harvesting the trees. Ed Patterson, tree farm manager, is especially pleased with this growing season. "Although we'd like more rain, the tree farm has received sufficient moisture. Out of the 15,000 trees on the farm, hundreds will be ready to harvest this Christmas." Tours of the farm can be arranged by calling (540) 939- 4106. School, scout and church groups are welcome.
