In Brief . . .
Bath County School Board
¦ Following closed sessions before and after its regular meeting, the Bath County School Board permanently expelled a Bath County High School student; accepted the resignation of English teacher Angie Keyser; approved hiring Joseph Altizer as carpentry teacher at Mertz Vocational and Technical Center; and accepted the resignation of custodian Jennifer Vess. ¦ The board approved a hiring a chartered bus to take 20 band members to the annual Virginia Association of School Boards meeting in November and an overnight field trip to attend a competition in the spring. ¦ School board members authorized superintendent Dr. David Smith to continue negotiations with Bath Community Hospital Wellness Center in Bacova to provide weighttraining to high school athletes. The activity bus will be used to provide after-school transportation to and from the center. An alternate plan proposed last month to erect a metal building on school property for weight training was not discussed because board members said they had requested additional information that was not received. Smith will contact architects to develop plans and cost for adding or renovating space in the current high school building for weight training equipment. ¦ Virginia Department of Education Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Billy K. Cannaday Jr. will speak Thursday, Oct. 4 at the academic banquet program at Valley Elementary School. The banquet is for students who passed SOLs. Attendance at the banquet is by invitation only due to limited space at the school. ¦ Average attendance is 725 students to this point in the school year, below the 750 projected in the budget. This may impact the amount of money Bath schools receive from the state, said business manager Justine Rider. ¦ Waldeck requested and board members approved having Smith develop a policy prohibiting students from riding to school activities in vehicles driven by other students. ¦ The entire 1,000-plus-page division wide policy manual is now available online at: http:/ /sharepoint. bath.k12.va.us/board/Docs/ policy.aspx.
