In Brief . . .
Monterey Town Council

¦ Town council discussed a possible flooding hazard on Mill Alley near U.S. 250. Strait Creek bisects Monterey from west to east, then turns north as it leaves the east side of town. On the western side of town, a retaining wall has collapsed, leaving debris in the creek bed.

Councilman Francis Fenn said the culvert near the debris would be cleaned out next week. "I don't see any responsibility to clean out the creek up the creek," said Fenn.

The Army Corps of Engineers was not notified as requested last month.

Mayor Janice Warner said calling in the Corps was not needed. "When it is private property, it involves those people," said Warner.

"The landowners need to do something; but it's not up to the town to do it." Fenn said he spoke to the Corps four years ago and it would not have done anything to the creek.

Councilman Don Dowdy said the Virginia Department of Transportation wouldn't do anything to the creek since it belonged to the town. "If you take a backhoe and flush it out, it will eventually wash (debris) out with a few rains," said Dowdy.
