Mountain Grove VFD Appreciation Dinner
An appreciation dinner in recognition of the Mountain Grove Volunteer Fire Department was held Saturday, September 15 at the community center. Over 55 people attended with fire department volunteers, family, and friends joining together for this special event.
Willie Jenkins (standing), Fire Chief for over 25 years, gave a brief historyand work of getting this fire department started 30 yearsago. In this photo, Jenkins explained how the departmentacquired its first piece of equipment and the how thefirehouse was built. He told the group that today, thedepartment has the equipment needed, but not the man power. He urged the community become more involved and be a part of an aginggeneration of firemen. "Letus not lose," Jenkins said,"what we fought so hard to get."
Current firemen who were present at the dinner (front row, l-r) were: Jon Trees, Ray Ryder, Darrel Green, Bruce Ryder, Dottie Jenkins, Betty Ryder, David Kershner and Willie Jenkins, Fire Chief; (second row) M. G. O'Farrell, Jerry Phillips, Steve Gibson, Danny Hicks, Craig Buzzard and Bob McDaniel. Not pictured are Clyde Cutlip, Jean Cutlip, Jeremy Cutlip, Darrell Hiner and Harold Sparks. Jon Trees, above lighting an appreciation candle, explainedthe importance of the volunteer fire department's role inthe community. He stressed the need to encourage the youth and younger individuals to become involved, saying the community needs to look down the road five to ten years ahead. He expressed the need to encourage training and preparation for the future, as the department is a valuable asset to the community.
