First official 'Youth Build Day' held

Just before breaking for lunch, a check in the amount of $5,000 was presented to Michelle Connor, Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity's executive director, and Karen Armstrong, women build coordinator. The presentation was made by Jim Brown, State Farm agent in Franklin; Erin Bailey State Farm Insurance public affairs coordinator in Fairmont; and Eric Gates, State Farm Insurance agency field consultant. FRANKLIN, W.Va. - On Saturday, Sept. 29, Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity was the host for its first official Youth Build Day. This event was sponsored by State Farm Insurance in partnership with Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity and was held at the Women Build house at Habitat's South Fork Crossing development in Brandywine.

State Farm Insurance, as the only national underwriter for Habitat for Humanity's Youth Programs, is challenging youth to build the future. The Youth Program's mission is to involve young people, ages 5 to 25, in the work of Habitat for Humanity, and involve them as leaders in their communities and advocates of eliminating substandard housing and homelessness.

Eleven adults and 21 youth worked diligently to install kitchen cabinets; sand, rout, paint, measure, and cut baseboard trim; pick up rocks; rake and seed the lawn; set the commode; and install the bathroom vanity.

During lunch the volunteers were amazed as seven-year-old Kristen Kimble of Franklin sang two songs impersonating American Idol Star Kellie Pickler. Lunch was provided by Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity and Habitat Board member Becky Schlaegel.

When asked about the Youth Build Day, Franklin State Farm agent Jim Brown said, "It really is a pleasure to work with Habitat for Humanity. I'm proud to see a company the size of State Farm getting involved with local organizations and to see our insurance dollars being put back into our community."
