ALLEGHENY HIGHLANDS - The Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission is developing a regional tourism concept and brand for a region consisting of the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Craig, and Highland, and the cities and towns of Covington, Clifton Forge, Iron Gate, Monterey, and New Castle.
The project has been dubbed a 'tourism trail" proposal because the aim is to repackage the area's tourism assets into a thematic driving tour of the region.
Similar examples include The Crooked Road and the Round the Mountain projects in Southwest Virginia, the Handmade in America trail systems in Western North Carolina, and the new Wilderness Road project, which roughly parallels Interstate 81 in Western Virginia.
Project staff is collecting information on the historic sites, businesses (lodging and restaurants), outdoor recreational opportunities, artisans, crafters, and other assets and attractions in which potential visitors to the region might be interested.
A number of informational meetings have been organized so area residents can both learn more about the initiative and offer input into what might be included.
