Man detained at Ft. Lewis
BY CHARLES GARRATT • STAFF WRITER

MILLBORO - Bath county deputy sheriff Diedra "Dede" Shriver and Capt. Richard Armstrong detained an Alleghany County man after he made threats at Fort Lewis Lodge Tuesday.

According to Shriver, she and Armstrong were dispatched to the lodge about 12:30 p.m. when the department received a call saying a man had entered the lodge and threatened a man on the premises. The man making the threats was armed with a knife, Shriver said.

After arriving at the scene, Shriver placed the man in handcuffs and transported him to Bath Community Hospital under an emergency custody order. She explained she and Armstrong had the author- ity to institute such an order after evaluating the suspect and the situation "if the person is deemed to be a threat to himself or to others."

The suspect remained at BCH until a temporary detention order was issued by the magistrate after the suspect was evaluated by a mental health professional from Rockbridge Mental Health. The order allowed him to be transported to Crossroads Mental Health Services at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville.

A deputy from Alleghany County transported the man from BCH to AMC. Shriver explained this is required since the suspect is a resident of Alleghany. No further information is available on the suspect or the length of time he might be at Crossroads.

Shriver said the Bath sheriff's office had received a notice from Alleghany County to be on the lookout for the man prior to the incident Tuesday. The notice was issued because his family was concerned about him, said Shriver.

Wednesday, Fort Lewis owner John Cowden declined to comment and said he preferred the incident not receive any more attention. On Tuesday afternoon, Cowden had said the man was not a guest and he had "no idea who he was."

Shriver said no charges had been filed as of late Wednesday morning and the sheriff's department would not seek any charges "due to the mental status of the offender."

Cowden may seek charges through the magistrate's office if he chooses, she said.
