Highland Commissioner gets requested extension BY JAMES JACENICH • STAFF WRITER
MONTEREY - Department of Taxation tax commissioner Jamie. E. Bowen granted Highland County Commissioner of Revenue Bobbie Griffin an extension to Oct. 12 for filing tangible personal property. Bowen's Oct. 17 letter said, "In view of the circumstances surrounding this request, the extension is hereby granted as requested. I trust that the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue and the Office of the Treasurer will work together to ensure the timely preparation of bills for the taxpayers of Highland County."
Early last month Monterey mayor Janice Warner wrote a letter of complaint to the Highland County Board of Supervisors alleging delays on the part of the commissioner of revenue. "We have again been unable to get from the commissioner of the revenue the information we need to do our tax tickets," Monterey mayor Janice Warner said.
Warner pointed out Virginia Code requires the commissioner of revenue to furnish tax information by Sept. 1, or 90 days after the tax rates are set.
Griffin said understaffing, a lack of adequate part-time help and family health concerns delayed the preparation of the tax books.
Griffin said she was unaware she needed to file an extension. It was not the practice during her 16 years as deputy to file extensions, she said.
The town has received the tax information it requested and tax tickets should be going out this Friday, said town clerk Nancy Hooke.
