Calls plague Bath citizens
HOT SPRINGS - The Bath County Sheriff's Office has received a complaint of frequent calls from the phone number 1- 616-980-4019. It is sometimes identified as an extended vehicle warranty company, though caller IDs often show only the number while the company name is blocked.
A check of this number on the Internet shows a number of complaints from across the country. This company is now calling in Bath County.
When Bath County residents asked questions of the caller, the caller hung up. In other cases, when an individual was asked for the vehicle's year, the caller hung up. Often the caller pressures the individual to give them the vehicle identification number and other details.
The Bath County Sheriff's Office tried to contact this company. When officers dialed the number they were connected to an automated telephone system.
The system gave two options: "If you have been contacted by one of our people and wish to have your number removed, press 1."
The second option was: "If you wish to speak to an operator, press 2, or stay on the line."
The system then forwards the call to another number: 1-866-740- 7859. The sheriff's office reports that no one answered the call after dialing that number. An Internet check on the second number did not reveal any information on the company.
The Bath County Sheriff's Office urges county residents to ignore calls from this number and company.
If residents have not already done so, they should register their telephone numbers on the "National Do Not Call List."
The web address for the list is: http://www.ftc.gov/donotcall.
Remember not to give out any information to a caller you do not know or recognize, especially regarding bank or personal information.
