Fire ban still in effect
ROANOKE - The fire ban remains in effect on the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest lands in Virginia and West Virginia. Fire officers have examined ground conditions and the expected weather outlook in light of the rainfall received last week and determined that the fire ban will remain in effect on national forest lands. Despite the rainfall, drought and woody fuel moisture indices remain well above the 10-year average. The long range outlook calls for sunny and breezy conditions and frost and leaf fall will add to condi- tions favorable for wildfire activity.
The ban is on campfires and stoves or grills that use solid fuel such as charcoal, wood or coal. Stoves that use liquid or gas fuel will still be permitted. This ban applies to all national forest lands administered by the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, including both developed and dispersed areas. The ban will expire Saturday, Dec. 15.
