In Brief ...
Monterey Town Council
¦ Town employee Mike Isles said the town will clean out the culvert at the west end of Mill Alley along Strait Creek. Debris from a collapsed retaining wall on private property has collapsed into the creek bed and is affecting the culvert just downstream. "We are going to dig out on the other side so that when water pushes through it will pile up at the base of the culvert," said Isles. "We are not going to take out any of that wall that has fallen; that is not our responsibility." Town officials previously said the owners of the wall intend to repair it. ¦ Mayor Janice Warner said engineering firm Mattern and Craig will submit plans for the new sewage treatment plant to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality Nov. 7 for review. "I'm going to make a habit of calling DEQ once a week and ask them, 'Have you looked at our specs yet; how close are we to getting it approved?'" Warner said she would like to see the plans approved by DEQ and the bidding process begin by the end of the year. ¦ Town clerk Nancy Hooke said tax tickets should go out Friday (Nov. 2). Warner added, "It has been a hard thing to do, but we have gotten figures (from the commissioner of revenue office). There is mistake after mistake; we haven't got it all cleared up yet. I worked for Highland County for 11 years and I did not see as many mistakes in that time as I have seen (with this report)." ¦ Isles said water flow spiked to more than 300,000 gallons a day during last week's four and a half inches of rain but returned to around 51,000 gallons soon after the rain stopped. Warner noted, "I think a lot of that had to do with the (former) pool." The town recently repaired a sewer line near the pool at the west end of town on U.S. 250.
