Millboro Happenings By Gina Hamilton
¦ A steady stream of residents moved in and out of the polling place at the Ruritan Club Tuesday morning. About 90 had voted in just over two hours after polls opened at 6 a.m. Several candidates or their representatives braved the chilly morning to greet voters in the parking lot. Democracy in action, for sure.
¦ A Harvest Holiday of family fun is on tap this Saturday, Nov. 10, hosted by the Millboro Ruritan Club. Beginning at 3:30 p.m., free hayrides will be offered for an hour from the picnic shelter across from the elementary school on Church Street. A petting zoo will be open at the shelter as well. After the hayrides, writer/reporter and traveler Margo Oxendine will tell stories at the nature trail bridge (a short walk from the picnic shelter), and also at 6 p.m. in the Ruritan building. As people work up an appetite, a spaghetti dinner will be available at a small cost from 4-7 p.m. Besides spaghetti, the dinner will include a salad, warm bread, dessert, and a choice of coffee, tea or milk.
¦ An ornament-making contest is in the works, organized by Douthat State Park, beginning on Monday, Nov. 12. Area students, 4-H club members, church groups and scouts are invited to make holiday ornaments from natural or recycled materials. The contest will continue to Friday, Nov. 30. Call the park for more details at (540) 862-8100 or e-mail Douthat@dcr.virginia.gov.
