Meet Your Neighbor Alfred Olen Armstrong
 | | Alfred Armstrong was born in the same house, in 1933, where he lives today with wife, Shirley. They married in 1957. They have eight children and all but two live in Highland County. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong met at the school they both attended in Doe Hill. The school house is still standing and is now occupied by Tam and Lowell Simmons. Armstrong's mother taught school there for a couple of years. He didn't like the idea of her being a teacher, either, he says. Armstrong is a farmer. He had been a roofing contractor. As a young man he traveled around quite a bit shearing sheep. But nowadays he mostly farms cattle. His son, Scotty, raises sheep and lives next to his father. The story behind the house is most fascinating. The house was built by Armstrong's grandmother's sons. Armstrong said the front of the existing house is pre- Civil War. The modern house had been expanded to hold the extended family with their 15 grandchildren. (Photo courtesy Rison Photography, www.risdonfoto.com) |
