Election update
Highland County
¦ The write-in votes have been counted and, unofficially, it appears that Joe Neil of McDowell has won a seat as a director of the Mountain Soil and Water Conservation District. Highland has two seats on the board, but only Jim Sponaugle officially filed to run, leaving one seat open for whoever got the most write-in votes. Neil received 30 votes. Dan Foster, outgoing MSWCD director, who had stated his intention not to run for reelection, received 10 votes. Sponaugle earned the other seat with 1,267 votes. ¦ The unofficial count of write-ins for other Highland County offices comprised less than one percent of the vote, election officials said. In the race for state senator from the 24th district, which incumbent Sen. Emmett Hanger won on a two to one margin, there were no write-in votes from Highland County. In the uncontested delegate race, which Del. Chris Saxman won, there was one vote cast for a write-in candidate. Highland clerk of court had two write-ins, and Commonwealth's attorney had 54. Of that total, Highland attorney Brian Richardson received 41 write-in votes. One write-in is recorded for sheriff, five for commissioner of revenue, 11 for treasurer, three for supervisor and 42 for school board. Bobbie Hefner, who chose not to seek re-election to the school board, received 11 votes. ¦ Despite requests from citizens and The Recorder, Maxine Huffman of the county's electoral board refused to provide the names of any other write-in candidates who received votes.
