A Vision in Courage
Copyright 1988 by Mary Cantrell
I marched into battle; I prayed to the Almighty God
My feet again would touch the American sod
Many conflicts within myself and in my soul did rage
My emotions and my fears within my heart were caged
Thoughts of family and home consumed my weary soul
I witnessed comrades fall who were so young, so bold
I am the American; I reflected that position
To serve my country and yet live became my only mission
So many questions I had for which there were no answers
My mind confirmed "War is the deadliest cancer"
I witnessed courage that knew no measure
A thought of home became my only pleasure
I knew heartache; I knew pain and the sweat of brow
I knew the meaning of survival and I cherish it no
The courthouse lawn was filled with veterans and families of the Walk of Honor.
Broken spirits and hearts were surely lent
We held our courage; amidst despair we never bent
Soldiers were wounded; soldiers fell
Living and fighting in a private hell
If in bitterness at times I trudge
If you were not there, do not be the judge
May our nation never take for granted: peace
Lest the lessons of war never cease
I ask of America: Give me my honor, I do beseech
The memories of my comrades are within my reach
The ideals for which I surely fought
Must stand above all of the answers sought
I placed my patriotism above my fears
I tasted the saltiness of my own tears
I fought for peace in a desolate land
I AM A VETERAN,
A PATRIOT,
A PROUD AMERICAN In honor and memory of the brave who gave so much
