Friends of Pendleton to meet Dec. 7 to review wind project
FRANKLIN, W.Va. - Friends of Beautiful Pendleton County meet Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at Pendleton County Library, lower level, to update citizens about industrial wind turbine project activities locally and beyond.
In addition, organizers will discuss ways citizens can support the group's efforts in opposing the project planned by U.S. Wind Force's Liberty Gap LLC.
Liberty Gap had applied twice for a state permit to construct and operate a 50-turbine utility atop Jack Mountain near the Virginia-West Virginia border.
The West Virginia Public Service Commission denied a permit to the company June 22.
Friends of Beautiful Pendleton County noted the following issues as "food for thought":
¦ How would the removal of up to 20,000 gallons of water a day from streams for about 4-6 months, as indicated in Liberty Gap's application, affect farms, residences, fish, other wild life and recreation in Pendleton and downstream?
¦ A visit to neighboring Grant County shows how serious a threat wind projects are becoming for Pendleton County. Last weekend, one member saw 22 turbines on Mt. Storm from the Spruce Knob observation tower. Turbines can also be seen from the Germany Valley Overlook.
Those who share concerns about this issue are urged to attend. For more information, call (304) 576-2602 or (304) 358-7566.
