Club plans next tour
MONTEREY - The Monterey Garden Club met Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Highland County Public Library. Hostesses for the meeting were Mary Hager and Barbara Richards.
Blue Ribbon winners for artistic exhibits were Susan Blanchard, Elizabeth McCoy and Mary Hille McCoy. For horticulture exhibits, blue ribbons were awarded to Elizabeth McCoy and Mary Hille McCoy.
Members voted to move forward with the house and garden tour that will be held Saturday, July 12, 2008, in the McDowell Valley area of Highland County. Lisa Munchel is chairing the committee with the help and support of members.
After the business meeting, members viewed the searing documentary "Black Diamonds - Mountaintop Removal and the Fight for Coalfield Justice."
Citizens of West Virginia featured in the film have been directly affected by blasting, dust, flooding, unknown chemicals in their water supply, noise pollution or the loss of beautiful views near their homes.
The next club's meeting will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4 at the home of Susan Blanchard. Members will bring wrapped gifts for the annual club auction. The proceeds go towards camp scholarships offered each year to area students.
