Millboro Happenings
By Gina Hamilton

· A pine tree in front of the old Millboro school on High Street is lit again for the holiday season after several years of darkness. The colorful lights cast a warm glow in the night. Millboro Ruritan Club members received help from BARC electric cooperative in getting the lights on the rather tall tree. After Sunday evening's tree lighting, those who came out shared some social time and great cookies, cider, cocoa and coffee in the warm comfort of the clubhouse. It was a most hospitable event hosted by the club and reminded me of the German word "Gemuetlichkeit," a term for people enjoying friendship and harmony in a home-like atmosphere.

· People tend to focus more on doing good deeds at this time of year, and one such opportunity is ahead on Saturday, Dec. 8, when a cake walk will be held at 7 p.m., at Millboro Elementary School, in memory of John Mace, who died Nov. 11 at the age of 19. The event will also include a 50/50 raffle, door prizes, and food and beverages will be available. A variety of donated baked goods is needed for the cake walk. Money raised will go to the John Mace Memorial Fund. For more information, please call (540) 997-9055 or (540) 292-8086.

Concert musicians from the Garth Newel Music Center in Warm Springs, Debbie Yarrow, left, and Jaime Letourneau, receive applause after performing for the Christmas musical at Millboro Christian Church the evening of Sunday, Dec. 2. With Yarrow on flute and Letourneau on violin, they played selections of the season from "Away in a Manger" to "Silent Night," and accompanied the audience in sing-along hymns that ended with "It is Well With My Soul." Between the musical selections, narrator Greg McMullen presented the Christmas story with Bible readings from Luke. The Rev. David Williams noted the hymns preach the gospel message. He urged those present to reflect on the meaning of the birth of Jesus and to keep the spirit of this event in their lives and in their dealings with others. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton)
· Another good deed would be to donate blood at a blood drive being held Thursday, Dec. 13, from noon to 5 p.m., at the Millboro Ruritan Club. The goal is 30 pints. The event is the second annual blood drive sponsored by the club each year. Members of the American Red Cross, Roanoke Valley Chapter, will be on hand to process volunteers. More information about participating as a blood donor is available by calling the chapter at (540) 985-3535. This year, if anyone wants to come at a specific time, appointments can be made by calling Olivia Haney at (540) 997- 9135.

The Rev. David Williams of Millboro Christian Church shares the message of Christmas at the tree-lighting ceremony Sunday, Dec. 2, in front of the old Millboro school on High Street. About 30 people braved the inclement weather to participate, buoyed surely by the anticipation of hot beverages and cookies afterward at the nearby Millboro Ruritan Club. Busy bakers, including members Millboro Presbyterian Church, provided a smorgasbord of cookies to sample with hot cider, cocoa and coffee amid congenial conversation inside the warm and nicely decorated Ruritan facility. After several years without holiday lights, the tree was lit again this year through the combined efforts of the local Ruritans and the Bath Alleghany Rockbridge Electric Cooperative (BARC) based in Millboro. The company provided a crew with bucket loader to shape the large pine and string the lights, which were donated by people in the community, according to Ruritan Olivia Haney. · The Christmas Music Program at Millboro Elementary School has been rescheduled for Monday, Dec. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. The school is located on Church Street. It was previously planned for Dec. 3.

The Millboro Ruritan Club presented its Ruritan of the Year award to Olivia Haney on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Haney, a Ruritan member for the past three years, is shown here accepting the award from club president Tom Duquette. Haney will also serve as club vice president next year. Other 2008 officers will see Duquette continuing as president, Judy Waters as secretary, and Vivian Manis as treasurer. Willie Ryder will serve as a director on the board, along with outgoing vice president Steve Halterman. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton)
