Youth leadership forum set

MONTEREY - The Bath and Highland Disability Services Board announces the 2008 Virginia Youth Leadership Forum. The forum will be held Jul. 14- 18, 2008, at Christopher Newport University, Newport News.

The YLF is a leadership development opportunity for those students with physical and sensory disabilities. The mission of the five-day forum is to empower students with disabilities with leadership skills, through large and small group activities focusing on leadership and teambuilding. Delegates are encouraged to develop a personal leadership plan that includes career and life goals.

Twenty-five students will be selected as delegates to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia at next summer's forum. The selection process is competitive and students must meet certain eligibility requirements, which are:

¦ Be in tenth or eleventh grade as of Dec. 15, 2007; or if students are in non-graded programs, they must be returning to high school for at least one year after the 2008 school year.

¦ Have a disability, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

¦ Have demonstrated leadership potential in their school and community.

¦ Reside in Virginia.

Any student who meets the above criteria is eligible to apply whether they attend public, private or state schools, or through home schooling. There is no cost to attend the 2008 forum.

For more information or an application, call toll free (800) 846-4464 (voice/TTY) or e-mail Teri.Barker@vbpd.virginia.gov or Kara.White@vbpd.virginia.gov.

The application can be downloaded off the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities website at www.vaboard.org/ylf.htm.

There is a deadline in order to be considered as a delegate. Completed applications and all required information must be mailed to the VBPD offices and received on or before 5 p.m., Mar. 31, 2008.
