| MONTEREY - Town Council is working on a draft policy regarding sewer connection lines outside town limits. Council is preparing for future expansions to the system and wants to make sure builders and contractors are aware of the town's sewerage compatibility needs.
The final draft should be ready by the Jan. 3 council meeting. Being a policy and not an ordinance, it doesn't require a public hearing, said town attorney Melissa Dowd.
Councilmen recommended a statement be added to the policy requiring manhole placement every 200- 250 feet. That parallels existing manhole coverage in town and allows town employees to use sewage line "snaking" equipment already on hand to handle a blockage in the line.
"If somebody does everything on this list, will it take care of it so we don't have maintenance issues?" asked councilman Sam Shell.
Fenn said that was the purpose of the policy statement. "We want it installed meeting the proper criteria and with an appropriate fee so it can be tied in to our system," said Fenn.
Town employees Mike Isles and Nancy Hooke, with the assistance of Mayor Janice Warner, are putting the final draft together for review in January. After the draft is finished, Dowd will take a look at it.
Once approved, a copy of the policy will be sent to the county building and zoning official and to "anyone who may be doing this," said Fenn.
