In Brief . . . Monterey Town Council ¦ Mayor Janice Warner of Monterey told town council that plans for the new sewer plant were delivered to the Department of Environmental Quality Nov. 7. She said DEQ has not yet looked at the plans, but she is hopeful the department will approve them in time for the town to advertise for bids on the project before the end of January.
¦ Warner said the first snow removal of the season went well, except for the sidewalk in front of Mickey Fenn's residence on Spruce Street and the sign in front of Evelyn's Pantry being too close to the sidewalk.
¦ Council approved a motion to send a letter of thanks to attorney John Lohr for his years of service to the town. Lohr is retiring from the practice of law at the end of this year. He resigned from his position as town attorney several years ago.
¦ A joint public hearing with the planning commission on David Botkin's conditional use permit request to open a landscape materials business on Mill Alley and to consider a sign variance for the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control store is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20 at the Highland County Modular Conference Center.
¦ The next regular meeting of council is 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3 at the Highland County Public Library.
