Millboro Happenings By Gina Hamilton
 | | This year's Christmas Mother, Trudy Woodzell, back row, left, meets with students at Millboro Elementary School on Monday, Dec. 10, to collect the goods all grades collected for the program that serves the community. Others in the back row, from left, are: Toby Taliafero, Thomas Shrader, Morgan Randozzo, Paige Lotts, Kiwi Plecker, and Sara Crummett. Front: Ben Wolfe, Grace Hewitt, Max Watkins, John Strickler, Katie Via, Bing Wolfe, and Principal Martha Reish. While MES has participated in the program for many years by collecting food items, in the past two years students and staff "adopted" recipients and shopped for their needs, according to school librarian Karen Bowyer. She said this year they collected items for residents at The Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs, as well as food items. Other donated items this year include wrapping paper and supplies. The Student Council Association had placed collection boxes in the school lobby and letters were sent home to parents about the project. (Courtesy photo by MES librarian Karen Bowyer) |
| ¦ A blood drive is being held today, Thursday, Dec. 13, until 5 p.m., at the Millboro Ruritan Club. The goal is 30 pints. Members of the American Red Cross, Roanoke Valley Chapter, will be on hand to process volunteers. For more information, please call Olivia Haney at (540) 997-9135.
 | | Deputy Charles Burger from the Bath County Sheriff's Office checks for fingerprints on the Verizon repeater housing attached a telephone pole in Millboro on Monday, after vandalism to the line that left about 300 residents without telephone service most of the day. The pole is located at the intersection of TC Walker Road and High Country Road (638). According to a Verizon repairman, someone had tried to disconnect the large cable on the pole, most likely to sell the copper it contained for scrap. As of Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff's office had no further information and the investigation is continuing. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton) |
| ¦ Millboro Elementary School will present its Christmas music program on Monday, Dec. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. The school is located on Church Street.
¦ A cake walk held last Saturday to benefit the John Mace Memorial Fund raised $2,145. The event was organized by Tammy Vess of Millboro and Sheena Seale of Goshen. Both thank everyone who donated cakes and helped at the event.
¦ Vandalism was the cause of about 300 homes in town losing telephone service most of last Monday. It seems stealing copper was the motive, as thieves attempted to disconnect a long piece of telephone cable off a pole, according to crews from Verizon, who had to replace the cable and repeater housing. The Bath County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. During the time the land line was out, cell phones also did not work for calls within the town.
¦ As the old year bows out soon, some people may be thinking about making New Year's resolutions. One worthwhile endeavor would be to join the Ruritan Club, which has served Millboro for 56 years. A most successful recent project was completion of the nature trail. Members focus on community service projects to make our town a better place to live and enjoy. A new brochure notes the club works in five service areas: business and professions, citizenship and patriotism, environment; public service; and social development. The club also helps young people by funding various projects and trips, and with scholarships for college or trade school. The friendly group of members meets on the second Monday each month at 6:30 p.m. at the clubhouse behind the old Millboro school. They also provide a great meal at each of their meetings. For details on becoming a member or for more information, please call president Tom Duquette at (540) 997-1061, or vice president Olivia Haney at (540) 997-9135.
