Keep tabs on your own blood pressure at HMC
MONTEREY - Highland Medical Center invites residents to visit a new blood pressure monitoring station in its waiting room. The station features an easy to use automatic blood pressure cuff and literature about managing high blood pressure and other heart disease and stroke topics. The public can use the monitor to measure their own blood pressure.
Because there are no symptoms, many people have high blood pressure for years without knowing it. The National Institutes of Health recommends everyone have their blood pressure measured at least every two years. Blood pressure lower than 120/80 is considered optimal. If either number is higher, you should discuss your blood pressure with a healthcare professional.
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. You can reduce your risk by:
• Eating a nutritious, low-fat diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain, high-fiber foods.
• Doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week.
• Limiting the amount of alcohol you drink.
• Maintaining a healthy weight.
• Reducing the amount of salt in your diet.
If your healthcare provider has previously diagnosed your blood pressure as high, monitoring and recording measures between visits can provide important information for treatment. Work with your healthcare provider to determine a target or "goal" for your blood pressure.
