Firecracker Christmases
Back in the 1920's when I was growing up in Pot Likker Hollow in the Allegheny mountains of Virginia, we had snow for all of the Christmases I can remember.
I had many cousins who lived almost a hollerin' distance and it was a tradition for all of us to bundle up very early on Christmas morning and go outside to watch the grown-ups of our families shoot off a few fireworks, especially Roman Candles. It was sort of a contest among our neighbors to see who lit the first fire cracker to start off the holiday.
We all lived up and down hills from each other and it always seemed to us kids that the prettier explosions were miles above our heads high in the sky all around us.
