School board prepares for budget planning
      WARM SPRINGS - The Bath County School Board made several personnel appointments this week, including 22 for coaching assignments. Twenty of those got affirmative votes from all five board members. Two assistant football coaches - Robert Plecker and Jeremy Cutlip - were approved 3-2 with Chairman Eddie Ryder and Warm Springs representative Jake Cleek dissenting.

      MONTEREY - Highland County Public School teachers Julia Blanchard and Jessica Pyle explained to school board members Monday what it takes to get become a National Board Certified Teacher through the National Board for Professional teaching standards, a non-profit organization founded in 1994 with the purpose of advancing the quality of teaching and learning.

Composite index bill could increase education dollars in more counties
      RICHMOND - Sen. Mark Obenshain (RHarrisonburg) has submitted a Senate bill (SB 559) that would allow more counties to negotiate increased state funding for education.

      MONTEREY - Several concerned parents attended the meeting of the Highland County School Board Monday to express their discontent with the senior trip policy approved a year ago, which applies to ninth graders beginning with the current school year.

Academic Honor
      Justin Siron ROANOKE - Justin Siron currently attends Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke as a sophomore. During the first semester he was named to the president's list with a GPA of 4.0 taking 14 credits. During the second semester with 15 credits, Siron was named to the dean's list with a 3.75 GPA.
