MARCH 6, 1958

Success is measured by a severe yardstick, and no amount of imagination can spell out success for the Highland County Chamber of Commerce in its first year after reorganization last February. On the other hand, however, no one who has followed the chamber and worked with it can say it has not shown some results. The biggest obstacle confronting the organization is membership. This group is willing to work but it needs backing, and active support must be given to Highland's number one hope for solving problems that become more serious each year.

The March meetings of the Highland County Board of Supervisors and Board of Education, held on Monday, consisted mainly of work on the yearly budget and other routine business, with the supervisors in session again on Tuesday to further consider county finances. The present tax levy in Highland is $3.25 per $100 valuation with 50 cents going into the general fund; $2 for the school operation fund; and 75 cents for the school building fund. Additional revenue will be gained this year by the adoption of a $10 license fee on cars and trucks which is effective March 15.
