Highland County temperatures reached a summer high of 85 degrees on July 5, the hottest day on record this summer. The mercury has averaged 81 degrees maximum for the first sixteen days of July. Official records at the Monterey weather station show, however, that minimum temperatures reached at night have averaged 57 and 1/2 degrees for wonderful sleeping conditions for residents and tourists who now fill the tourist homes and hotel.

Berlin Armstrong of McDowell was named commander of American Legion Post No. 155 at a meeting of that organization held last week. Other officers are Ray Eagle, first vice commander; Louie Ralston, second vice commander; Fred C. Corbett, adjutant and finance officer; Marvin L. Eagle, sergeant-at-arms; H.B. Hooke, chaplain; A Lee Lockridge, historian, and C.R. Wheeler, membership chairman.

Paige Mary Gutshall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Gutshall of Monterey, Shirley Malcolm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Malcolm of McDowell and Benny Armstrong, son of Mr. and Mrs. Berlin Armstrong of McDowell are attending Boys' and Girls' State at VPI in Blacksburg this week. The three county delegates will be seniors at Monterey High next year and are sponsored by the Monterey Lions and Blue Grass and McDowell Ruritan Clubs and the American Legion Post No. 155.

Monterey has her first span of cement pavement. It is along Main Street in front of the lot on which the new bank is being erected.
