Highland's eagle makes big trek to New England
      MONTEREY - On March 17, the staff at the Center for Conservation Biology at the College of William and Mary placed a radio-transmitter tracking device on a three-year-old female golden eagle that was trapped near Tamarack Ridge in Highland County.

      MONTEREY - "Those of us who live here see the birds regularly but in order to continue the survey, we need you to report your sightings," says Patti Reum and Sandy Hevener of the Highland County Eagle Survey. "To make it easier, make a mental note of your observations and keep a list which you can submit on a weekly or monthly basis," they say.

      MONTEREY - As of Tuesday, no one had contacted the voter registrar's office to qualify as a candidate for the special election for Highland commissioner of revenue, but at least three women so far are seeking signatures to qualify.

      HOT SPRINGS - Lieutenant Noel T. "Timmy" Dunnagan, a 26 year veteran of the Bath County Sheriff's Office, received the "Cop of the Quarter" award from Lodge 24 of the Fraternal Order of Police.

215 already signed up for Mountain Mama Bike Challenge, commission says
      MONTEREY - Preparation for the Mountain Mama Bike Challenge is moving full-speed ahead, the Highland County Recreation Commission reported Monday. The two-state, three-county bike challenge is set for Aug. 2, and 215 riders are already pre-registered; more are expected the day of the event.

      HOT SPRINGS - For employees of The Homestead and others in the area, Saturday's U.S. Senate debate didn't really mean much more, outside their normal activities. Ethan Dressler, working the front desk, said the day was no different from any other and called those visiting The Homestead a "normal group.

      MILL GAP - One of the most delightful and least known parks in Highland County is maintained by the Mill Gap Ruritan Club, located about 11 miles south of Monterey on Mill Gap Road. At the July club meeting, Caroline Smith was named manager of the park.

     "Valley of the Cowpasture," an oil by Rodney Laughon, won the William M. Grover Galleries award for best landscape in oil at the 44th annual Bath County Art Show. The show closed Sunday, with "impressive results," notes Cathy Singleton of the Bath County Arts Association. A tribute to Oz Man
About Your Pets
      Ozzie Erdman Sedge is gone. But he will never be forgotten. The Oz Man, as I and his loving people, Roy and Sue, liked to call him, passed away without a whimper Saturday, July 19. He was 13. Some of you in Hot Springs may remember The Oz Man. He was a gray and white, galumphing big dog, some sort of Polish shepherd. He lived at the Canary Cottage.

History museum offering free admission to educators in August
      Richmond, - The Virginia Historical Society, the Official State Historical Society of Virginia, has declared August to be Teacher Appreciation Month. Record number of young readers are 'Catching the Reading Bug'

      n The library has been hopping this summer and it's great to see so many people coming by. The summer reading program has been a big success and great fun so far. There are a record number of participants this year; 102 children have signed up and nearly half of those have completed their reading, and returned their reading logs for prizes.

     Word of Faith Church in Monterey recently received a conditional use permit to put up a new sign. The old sign, below, stood higher than the new sign, above. Highland planners were concerned the new sign would be too large. In a residential zone, signs are allowed to be no more than 10 square feet without a conditional use permit. With a permit, they can be as large as 20 square feet. Word of Faith's sign is approximately 18 square feet in size.
