Ballot may hold 8 for county job

MONTEREY — Time is about to run out on the official Aug. 22 deadline for candidates to qualify for the commissioner of revenue special election.

As of press time this week, one additional candidate, Patricia Wright of McDowell, had filed with voter registrar Alice Shumate but had not yet been qualified.

Local businesswoman Lunora Doyle of Monterey said she intends to file by Friday. Doyle ran for commissioner of revenue in 2007.

"I really wanted it last time," Doyle said. "I put my heart in it before." Doyle's business experience includes computer, bookkeeping and accounting skills, she said.

The special election to fill the vacancy created by current commissioner of revenue Bobbie Griffin's retirement Aug. 31 will be held Nov. 4. The deadline for candidates to qualify is Aug. 22 but Shumate had asked candidates to submit the required paperwork by Aug. 19 to allow ample time for verification.

Qualified candidates as of Wednesday this week include:

• Debbie Botkin, deputy commissioner of revenue,

• Darlene Crummett, Highland High School secretary,

• Michelle Smith, the former deputy commissioner,

• Crysta Stanton, the executive director of the Highland Historical Society museum and heritage center,

• Nancy Vance, Highland Elementary School librarian, and

• Aaron Will, Highland County sheriff's office dispatcher.

STUARTS DRAFT — The Raymond Nelson family reunion was held Saturday Aug. 2, at Sherando Lake near Stuarts Draft.

Those attending were: Jay and Dawn Christian, Trip and Dalton, Pat and Gary Brubakerand, and Francis Coffman, all of Stuarts Draft; Frances and Angela Selmon of Hightown; Cornelia Nelson, Cassandra and Ryan King, Alec and Bryn of Bridgewater; Deana Smith, Raymond, Emma, Georgia and Mantha, all of Grottoes.

Next year's reunion will be held the first Saturday of August.
