Huffman, Mines sentenced in Bath court
      WARM SPRINGS - A tearful scene unfolded in Bath County Circuit Court Monday, when Eric Huffman was sentenced on 10 felony charges of breaking and entering and grand larceny. Huffman was also convicted in June of one misdemeanor vandalism charge as a result of the burglary spree.

New charges brought in fatal accident
      MONTEREY — A grand jury on Tuesday indicted James Daniel Hass, 36, of Monterey, in connection with a May 2 car accident in which Robert Logan Stuber, 14, a passenger in Hass' vehicle, was killed. Hass is charged with involuntary manslaughter and one count of felony child neglect.

Drug-possession indictments handed down in Highland Circuit Court
      MONTEREY — A Highland Circuit Court grand jury Tuesday returned indictments against three people as a result of a Sept. 7 search warrant executed on 1388 Seldom Seen Road. Allegheny Highlands Regional Drug Task Force, the State Police tactical team, and Highland County Sheriff's office executed the warrant based on information from a confidential informant.

Two plead guilty in weapons theft case
      MONTEREY — On Tuesday in Highland County Circuit Court, Chad Ira Montgomery Sr., 29, of Covington, and Stephanie Lynn Hull, 27, of McDowell, pleaded guilty to felony breaking and entering and grand larceny charges. Montgomery and Hull were charged with breaking into the home of Stu Simmons of Blue Grass on Nov.

      By Jim Jacenich Lisa's mother died last week. The funeral is this Friday. I am in Pennsylvania at the gathering of the family for this final farewell. To say Lisa is grieving is not enough. Battlefields foundation initiates search for new director
      NEW MARKET — The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation announced Wednesday that its executive director, Howard J. Kittell, has accepted the position of president and CEO of The Hermitage, the presidential home of Andrew Jackson in Nashville, Tenn. Kittell's transition from the Battlefields Foundation to The Hermitage will take place in November.

4-H'ers enjoy summer camp
      WIRTZ — Over the summer, 85 Bath and Highland youth enjoyed a week at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Center at Smith Mountain Lake during the annual Junior 4-H Camp. During the camp, more than 30 hands-on classes were offered to youth involving everything from archery and volleyball to robotics and basket making.

     Cheyanne Wiseman, daughter of John and Kim West, recently attended the James Madison University Summer Band Camp. Through the efforts of previous band direction, Jerry Philp, and the contributions from the Highland County Arts Council, she was able to participate in this prestigious camp. Band camp consists of concert band, marching band, drum line, drum major, and color guard. Wiseman participated in the concert band along with 45 other students from the east coast. Concert band was conducted by Steve Bolstead. Auditions were held at the beginning of camp. Wiseman received first chair flute and performed three solos in various pieces during the concert. VDOF tree nurseries seek public's help with acorn, seed collection
      RICHMOND — Virginians can help preserve native tree species this time of year by collecting acorns and seeds from 11 species and delivering them to the nearest office of the Virginia Department of Forestry. "Generally, the best time to collect acorns is the last week in September through the first week of October," said Josh McLaughlin, nursery forester.
