Airplane ride of childhood recalled by Bath native Editor, The Recorder, The fascinating article, "Skies," by Geoff Cox in the Oct. 16 Recorder, brought back fond memories to me of a much smaller but similar and very exciting flying party that occurred at Ingall's Field in 1928. My dad, Harvey "Pete" Chaplin, drove our family of four to the top of the mountain to participate in our first airplane ride, offered that special day for 10 cents a pound. I remember clearly that he paid 80 cents for an eight-yearold, very excited me (Corilda) and a bit more for my older sister, Mary Elizabeth. Mama (Ellen Mustoe Chaplin) stayed on the ground with our three-year-old sister, Martha Jane, who got even with us later by marrying Eddie Kent, who was a pilot later hired by that very airport, but that's a different story. Though a very short flight, Daddy was able to point out the Chaplin farm and the Upper Chesapeake Golf Course where he worked in the valley just below.
Perhaps the local newspaper published an article concerning that day of excitement for many Bath County folk like the Chaplins. Sorry, I don't recall the month, only know for sure it was during the year 1928. |
