History comes alive at MES Reading Night
Jim Tennant of Millboro didn't have to re-enact a World War II soldier for students and family members at the elementary school's Family Reading Night program Tuesday evening - he was one. Trained as a radio officer, he was stationed in England, where he was assigned to the 389th Bomb Group and found "a lot of Americans over there." More training followed in large B-24 and B-17 bombers. "The Americans decided to fly in groups; the British in singles," he recalled, about 29,000 feet up or about five miles. "We flew like wild geese fly, in a big 'V.' Tennant said the lead bombardier did all the target sighting for the bombs they carried, 52 of the 100-pound bombs, some were 500 pounds and some even bigger. "We dropped the bombs and came back," he said, noting this was before D-day on June 6, 1944. During his third mission on May 28 that year, the plane he was on was hit over an airfield deep over Germany and lost the first of its four engines. "We started limping back over the English Channel and lost the second engine," Tennant recalled. "The pilot gave orders to ditch everything that was loose, then we lost the third engine and started going down. We were told to bail out." He said the only survival gear they had were small inflatable vests. "Before we bailed out, I gave out the SOS radio signals; it was my job, and all the stations in England got it," he said. He was rescued after about two hours in the cold water and went on to 27 more missions and two crash landings, but never had injuries, and was sure God had protected him. Tennant said 21 years later, children were playing on a beach (near where the plane went down) and dug up the remains of a body; it was the crew's tail gunner. Tennant said a special honor for him recently was traveling to meet Frank Buckles, the oldest veteran of World War I, in West Virginia. Tennant received a standing ovation after his heartfelt presentation at the school.
