Millboro Happenings By Gina Hamilton
¦ A Geography Bee is being held today, Jan. 10, from 2:15-3:15 p.m., at Millboro Elementary School.
¦ John Levengood of Massanutten Village, McGaheysville, has been selected to serve as page to the Senate minority leader in the 2008 session of the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond. The session began Jan. 9; it is scheduled to last eight weeks. John is an eighth grader at Elkton Middle School, where he is an honor student and in chorus and band. He is a member of the Massanutten Hurricanes swim team and has won several medals. His parents are Sandy and Jim Levengood, and he is the grandson of former longtime Millboro residents Judi and John McCoy, now of Grottoes. Last year,EMS civics teacher Ann Ridenour urged John to participate in the Eastern Mennonite University leadership program for teens and the Mock Virginia General Assembly also held at EMU. Ridenour also nominated him for the recent youth leadership conference held in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the National Youth Leaders State Conference where John had four days of training with other youth from Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia. He is torn between government and business as his chosen profession, but his family and friends are confident he will be successful whatever his choice.
 | | Breakfast - A downy woodpecker was busy seeking breakfast morsels in Millboro in an old dogwood tree last Monday. The bird was the size of a small chicken, so food must be plentiful. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton) |

 | | Post-Christmas use - Families reluctant to part with a beautiful fresh-cut Christmas tree can extend the tree's usefulness by putting it outside as bird feeder. A fun (although messy) way to make feeders is to use pine cones and smearing them with peanut butter and rolling them in bird seed. Floral wire can be used to attach the pine cones to the tree.
