Millboro Happenings By Gina Hamilton
¦ I stand corrected. In the picture I sent to The Recorder last week, I identified the wrong species of woodpecker. A reader, Jean Stinnett, very nicely pointed out in her e-mail that "it shows one of a pileated woodpecker we call a wood hen. The downy woodpecker is the smallest we have and the hairy woodpecker is a little bit bigger than the downy. The pileated is so amazing as he swoops through the forest, lands on a dead tree or stump and seems to devour his object while looking for insects." Many thanks, Jean. A number of other readers also pointed out the error. Speaking of birds, where are the other winter birds? None are showing themselves around here. I could use some more enlightenment.
¦ Two students have been named Math Olympiad winners at Millboro Elementary School: Kiwi Plecker and Laura Haney. Named previously were Mikahla Poffenbarger and Chase Halterman. The school has announced an early release day for Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 12:30 p.m.; teachers will have a work day that afternoon.
¦ A Community Movie Weekend is planned at Camp Accovac. On Friday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m., the film "One Night with the King" will be featured. On Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m., the movie "Meet the Robinsons" will be shown, followed at 7 p.m. by "Facing the Giants." For more information, call (540) 997-5964.
