Highland FFA game and wildlife show

MONTEREY - The Highland FFA will be holding the first Annual Game and Wildlife Show Friday through Sunday, Feb. 1-3, at the Highland Elementary Gymnasium. This event is to help raise money for the annual Highland County American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

The event is a very large undertaking for the FFA chapter. On Friday, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., the chapter will be accepting all types of wildlife taxidermy work for the show. Animals will also be accepted on Saturday morning until 11 a.m.

Accepted are deer, coyote, bobcats, turkey, bear, squirrel, groundhogs, African game, Western game, fish or any other wildlife. Also accepted are mounted and unmounted antlers. There will be a $10 charge for all large animals and a $5 charge for all small animals and fish. The animals will be judged. Ribbons and prize money will be given.

Try to bring in animals as early as possible on Friday, so the students can set up the show and arrange all the exhibits. These animals do not have to be huge trophies. The intent is to have a day where students and members of the community can bring in some of their animals to show off.

Organizations and business will also set up educational and informational booths on Friday and Saturday mornings. The Little Swit- zerland Strutters have donated $100 to help with this event.

Some of the organization planning on attending are Rockingham Cooperative, Highland Branch, Wild Turkey Federation, Southern Most Maple Products, Hunter's Paradise, A&A Taxidermy, the Conservation Office, and Pullins Archery. Any other organization interested in setting up a booth may call Highland High School at (540) 468-2129.

On Saturday, the doors will open to the public at 12 p.m. At this time the exhibits will open and a series of 45 to 60 minute seminars will begin. The seminars will consist of coyote trapping, turkey calling, meat processing, air and water quality, and archery and shooting. These seminars will go throughout the afternoon.

There door prizes will be given out every hour on the hour both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Little Switzerland Strutters have donated a valuable turkey call as one of the door prizes.

Saturday will be a busy day for the FFA members. Sunday will be a slower day, but the public is invited to come by the gymnasium to look at all the exhibits. The doors will close at 6 p.m. Animals and booths can be picked up starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

There will be admission and food will be served by the Highland FFA chapter.
