Millboro Happenings
By Gina Hamilton

¦ The Rescue Squad meeting on Thursday, Jan. 24, had good membership attendance. It was reported the squad responded to five calls in December and had a total 290 service hours. Jackets and shirts are on order that will identify EMTs and other members as volunteers of the Millboro Area Rescue Squad when they go out on calls.

¦ Millboro Elementary School is continuing its student and community reading project with the book, "The Trumpet of the Swan," by E.B. White. Encouraged by their principal, Martha Reish, students will read five chapters a week with their parents or other community members and work on chapter related questions and activities. The second installment of I Wonder questions follows for chapters six to 10.

Chapter 6: Before reading chapter 6, read the title of the chapter "Off to Montana." Look on the map where Montana is located. I Wonder why they are going to Montana. After completing chapter 6 I Wonder if Sam will see the swans again. Will Sam ever tell his father about the swans?

Reading project - Millboro Elementary School Principal Martha Reish presents the book and reading kit on "The Trumpet of the Swan" last Friday to fourth-graders in Kim Manion's class. All students at the school are participating in this reading project, which also involves parents and other interested community members who can request the kit with the book and "I Wonder" questions and activities to share. Chapter 7: Before beginning to read chapter 7, read the title of the next chapter, "School Days." I Wonder who is going to school. After reading chapter 7. I noticed that this class is unusual; there is a swan in the class. There seems to be more than one answer to the math questions and the first graders are reading words like CATASTROPHE.

I Wonder what would happen if a swan came to Millboro Elementary.

Chapter 8: Read the title of chapter 8, "Love." I Wonder who is in love. Same talked about love in chapter 7 will Louis fall in love? After reading the chapter I wonder what the cob is going to try and do. Why don't the cob and the wife have names? The cob and the wife want to fix Louis' problem. I think the cob is going to do something, but I don't know if it will be a good plan.

Chapter 9: Before reading, read the title, "The Trumpet." I Wonder if a trumpet would help Louis. How would a swan pay for a trumpet? After reading chapter 9. Wow! What a scene in the music store! I Wonder how Louis will carry a trumpet and a slate. Can he learn to play the trumpet; will he need to take lessons?

Chapter 10: Before reading "Money Trouble" I Wonder if the police will make Louis or his father pay for the trumpet. After reading chapter 10 I Wonder what camp will be like for a swan. Will he get paid for the job; $900 is a lot of money.
