It's a tree! It's a tower! It's a steath pine tree?
 | | It's a tree! It's a tower! It's a stealth pine tree? Smack dab in the center of downtown Hot Springs, behind The Homestead laundry, a tree has grown up quite rapidly. The very large tree or tower was erected by Verizon under a conditional use permit on The Homestead property, which assisted Verizon in siting the cell phone tower. To camouflage it, Verizon used its stealth pine tree model, according to Sherry Ryder, Bath County planner, who said the tower is 150 feet tall. (Recorder photo by Cynthia B. Coleman) |

 | | From a distance the cell phone tower does look like a tree, though more a fir tree than a pine. The antennas on top are visible, though the ones along the trunk are well hidden by its branches and can only be seen when close by. Yet on a hillside full of bare deciduous trees, which are almost 100 feet shorter, the stealth pine is noticeable to those driving north on U.S. 220. For those working in downtown Hot Springs, several people, when asked about the new tree, have not even noticed its presence. (Recorder photos by Cynthia B. Coleman) |
