DSLCC scholarships for firefighter dependents
CLIFTON FORGE - The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation announces the availability of the Virginia Firefighters Foundation Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2001 by the Virginia Firefighters Foundation to provide tuition assistance to dependents of Virginia firefighters who wish to study at DSLCC.
According to Helen Kostel, Scholarship chairman, initial disbursements were made to colleges in the southwest region of the state and DSLCC was one of the first award recipients. "We are delighted to be able to offer this Scholarship opportunity to students who are dependents of Virginia Firefighters," said Kostel. "It helps, in a very small way, to repay these brave men and women for their care of and sacrifice to the communities in which they live."
The applicant must fulfill the following eligibility requirements:
• Be a firefighter or the dependent of a Virginia firefighter and have a high school diploma, a minimum 2.25 GPA or GED Certificate.
• Be enrolled, or planning to enroll in at least one class, by the fall semester of the current year, at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.
• Submit a completed Virginia Firefighters Foundation Scholarship Application to the educational foundation office by Tuesday, April 1, 2008.
• Submit a short essay on career goals.
• Submit one letter of recommendation from a local citizen. Letters from relatives are not acceptable.
The Scholarship is granted for one year and applies to tuition assistance.
Since its creation in 1980, the educational foundation has awarded over $700,000 in Scholarships to students in the college's service area who make DSLCC their college of choice.
Governed by a volunteer board of directors comprised of representatives from the college's service area, the educational foundation strives to enhance community awareness of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College; promote goodwill in the community by building relationships with individuals, businesses and organizations; secure private contributions, bequests and donations; and account for, manage and appreciate monies or property donated to the foundation.
