Millboro Happenings
By Gina Hamilton

¦ Talk about wind on Sunday! While reading the Sunday paper that morning, I happened to look out a window and - snap! - I watched the top 30-foot section of a tall pine tree shear off like a broken pencil behind the house. Fortunately, it blew down between other trees and caused no property damage. Many other residents weren't so lucky and some were still without power Tuesday morning. One hard-hit area was reported on Coffee Pot Road, where the high winds took down 36 trees, most - about 30 trees - on the Camp Mont Shenandoah property, according to Bonnie Jenkins, a resident on the road.

¦ The Recorder has received an e-mail greeting from a resident in Millboro, South Dakota. "I was searching the Internet for info about Millboro, S.D., and I found you. Hello from Millboro, S.D. I am Brenda and my husband and I ranch on the Dakota prairie, raising cattle and horses. Looking at your town, I can see you are a larger town than we are. Our town only has one lady who lives in town right now, but there are a lot of neighbors around so we still have church and school in our town, but now that is all we have," she wrote. "So Hello from this Millboro to your Millboro." She said her town was named Millboro in hopes that a mill would be built on the Keya Paha River to grind grain. The mill was never built, but the name stuck anyway. Her Web site for the Rafter J Bar Ranch and quilting business is millboro@gwtc.net.

¦ Our elementary school is heading toward the end of its student and community reading project of the book, "The Trumpet of the Swan," by E.B. White. The last installment of I Wonder questions follows for chapters 16-21.

Chapter 16: Before reading chapter 16, read the title of the chapter "Philadelphia." I Wonder if this is his next stop how far from Boston is Philadelphia? (Find it on your map.) What will he see here? After completing Chapter 16 I Wonder if the zookeeper will keep his word and not pinion Louis? Will he really make this much money or will someone steal it?

Chapter 17: Before beginning to read chapter 17, read the title of the next chapter, "Serena." I Wonder if Serena will come to Philadelphia. After reading chapter 17 Ñ it is exciting that Serena is here.

I Wonder if she will be safe in Philadelphia, especially while Louis is gone to the night club. Now that she has found him, will they travel somewhere else?

Chapter 18: Read the title of chapter 18, "Freedom." I Wonder if Louis and Serena will go away now. Where would they go? After reading the chapter Ñ I Wonder if Sam will be able to convince the zoo keeper to let Serena be free. Is this a good idea for the swans to think about nesting here?

Chapter 19: Before reading, read the title, "A Talk About Money." I Wonder why they are talking about money. Will Louis pay his father's debt? Will something happen to the money? After reading chapter 19 Ñ it sounds like Louis is happy. I Wonder if the money will get to the music store owner. (Did you follow the route that Louis and Serena took on the map?)

Chapter 20: Before reading "Billings" I Wonder if Louis finds his father in Montana. Will Louis or his father go to the music store in Billings with the money? After reading chapter 20 - I Wonder about the whole adventure of the cob. Should he have done something different when he went to take the money?

Chapter 21: Before reading "The Greening Spring" Ñ I Wonder what will happen now that Louis and Serena are back with their family. Will they stay there? After reading chapter 21, do you think Sam's father knew all about the swans at the beginning of the story too? How has Sam changed during this whole time?
