Volunteers needed to transport cancer patients
ROANOKE - The American Cancer Society is searching for volunteers to assist with the Road to Recovery program in Alleghany and Bath counties. The Road to Recovery program is a free service for cancer patients who lack transportation.
Some patients may not have friends or relatives in the area who can accommodate their needs because they work and are unable to get a leave of absence. How- ever, Road to Recovery drivers donate their time and the use of their personal vehicles to transport cancer patients.
Being diagnosed with cancer and having to get treatment is a major burden to overcome. Worrying about how to get to treatment can compound the frustration if a person is without transportation.
Road to Recovery is the core of the American Cancer Society mission - people helping people overcome cancer. Road to Recovery volunteers provide essential services because even the greatest medical advances are useless if patients cannot get to and from treatment.
The American Cancer Society is currently seeking volunteer drivers who are willing to donate time plus their vehicles to assist those who lack a ride for cancer treatment. Volunteers will attend a two hour training session in their area with the American Cancer Society. A current and valid driver's license, a good driving record and proof of adequate auto insurance is necessary. Drivers will be able to select the days that are convenient for them.
The goal and mission of the American Cancer Society is to reduce cancer incidence and mortality rates. The four areas of concentration are cancer research, education, advocacy and services to cancer
patients. If you are interested in becoming
a Road to Recovery volunteer, please contact your local American Cancer Society representative Andrea Britt at (540) 774-2716 or (800) 393-0857.
