DAR met in Staunton

STAUNTON - The Sarah Murray Lewis chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met Saturday, Feb. 9 at Third Presbyterian Church in Staunton.

The Regent, Sarah Wolters, thanked the hostesses, Ms. Peggy Aglubat, Mrs. James H. Cook, Mrs. Miller E. Petty and Mrs. Arthur R. Reid Jr. Present were 21 members and one guest.

Barbara Reid gave the invocation. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was given by Leta Wimer, with the American's Creed led by Barbara Reid. The National Anthem was led by regent Wolters. Reid gave the chaplain' s concerns and cards were sent to Irene Bogan and Katie Smith. Nancy May read the president general's message and the

Nov. 2007 minutes were read by Nancy May, while Beckie Sherwood gave the treasurer's report. The ways and means were discussed by Carole Murray and the state regent's project was discussed by Helen Stogdale and Betty Landes.

The chapter has two new delegates going to the state conference at the Roanoke Hotel, Carolyn Smith and Anne Ady; the regent's alternate is Betty Van Fossen.

Van Fossen said the chapter could purchase note cards featuring Bath County landmarks. The chapter voted to have a silent auction in May and a tea in the future.

Connie Methany gave a talk on the Methany Family from Bath County. Daniel Methany immigrated to America in the 1600s and was at Jamestown along with a brother. He migrated to Charles County, Md. and married a Sarah Wentworth in 1653. He was involved in the uprising against Lord Baltimore in 1684. Methany was one of the planners from Stafford County in 1684 where he had a farm. Many Methanys in Bath, Augusta and Rockingham counties are descended from him.
