Pool is for everyone, says commission
BY JAMES JACENICH • STAFF WRITER

Highland recreation commission vice president Don Farrell wants the high school golf team he coaches to use the county weight room for weight training until the high school weight room is ready for use.
MONTEREY - "We want people to know they can benefit from this (pool)," said Highland County Recreation Commission treasurer and pool project chairperson Maggie Cavell.

The county swimming pool is fully funded and plans are to have it built by the end of summer. But the recreation commission needs around $300,000 to build the bathhouse that goes with the pool.

Monday night, commission members discussed several fund-raising opportunities.

One idea is to have a contest for school children. High school students would compete for an opportunity to produce a spot on Allegheny Mountain Radio's Monterey station promoting the pool project, hopefully to be aired before the end of the school year. Elementary students would be invited to participate in a poster contest and middle school students would compete in creating a logo for the project.

The purpose of the contests is to raise awareness of the anticipated benefits of the pool to county residents.

The commission agreed on a theme for the contests - Highland Pool Project: Healthy and fun for everyone.

In other fund-raising news, Cavell hopes to have 30 teams of four members each participate in the May 4 golf tournament at Needle's Eye - raising at least $6,000 for the pool.

"We have the golf tournament brochures, it's all set up to go. We need to advertise ... and I'm still looking for prizes," she said.
