TDS warns of e-mail scams
MADISON, Wisc. - Within the last several days, TDS Internet Service customers have received a variety of fraudulent e-mails known as phishing attacks. The emails state they are from "TDS Internet Mail Service" or "TDSMAIL TEAM." These are not legitimate TDS organizations.
"We are aware of at least four e-mails that are circulating currently asking customers for passwords or personal information," said Drew Petersen, director of legislative and public relations for TDS. "Customers must remember never to give out personal information or passwords to any e-mail or phone solicitation. TDS will never ask for your password or personal information by the use of e-mail or over the phone."
TDS utilizes many techniques to protect their customers including passwords and personal identification numbers or PINs. These passwords and PINs are owned by the customer and should be treated as valuable property, not given out to solicitors via e-mail or over the phone.
Phishing attacks are becoming common in this digital age, so most consumers can spot them quickly; however, it's important to maintain alertness for these fraudulent emails and delete them immediately.
Telltale signs of a phishing email include making immediate demands for information and/or spelling and grammar mistakes. TDS also advises that its' good idea to use this time to run a check on your virus protection software programs to ensure your systems have not been compromised.
TDS has posted warnings to its customers on the www.tds.net Web site, which is the portal used by TDS Internet customers; it is also on the Web site at www.tdstelecom.com.
