In Brief . . . Bath County School Board ¦ In school board action following a closed meeting, Teresa Jones was approved as a substitute cafeteria worker. The board also accepted the resignation of Lawanda Riley as an aide at Millboro Elementary School and denied a request by Laura Cooper for a leave of absence. ¦ Director of personnel and instruction Sue Hirsh presented the preliminary 20-day calendar for summer school. The calendar allows for the July 4th holiday. The board approved the calendar. ¦ The board thanked Michelle Timbrook for the work she is doing in the new agricultural program at BCHS. Timbrook presented a short overview of the program to the board. The small animal care and management program currently has 10 students enrolled, while forestry, wildlife and soil management has five students. "Classes are taught to provide practical application with a foothold toward a post-secondary education," Timbrook said. Students should be prepared for programs at Dabney Lancaster and Blue Ridge Community colleges, she said. ¦ Superintendent David Smith reported renovations are going well at BCHS. The roof project is 99.5 percent complete, he told the board. Students, faculty and staff are all pleased with the renovated first floor, he said. Roofing and Renovations has reached an agreement with prime contractor Nielson to assure damage to landscaping and grounds are properly taken care of at the end of the project. The board approved payment of invoices submitted for the month on the project. ¦ Hirsh read the certificate presented to Bath County High School by the state Board of Education bestowing the Virginia Index of Performance Competence to Excellence Award to BCHS for "preparing students of the Commonwealth for academic success and thoughtful and productive citizenship." ¦ Smith reported average daily membership for January was 717. Board member Barbara Waldeck noted ADM had slipped beneath the target of 94 percent attendance. She said she wanted to stress the importance of having every child present as much as good health will allow. Board member Jake Cleek asked about the nine students who withdrew during January. BCHS principal Pete Pitard said all of the students moved out of the county. Nine students also enrolled during the month.
