Wildlife habitat workshop comes to Monterey

MONTEREY - Virginia Cooperative Extension will host a workshop for property owners interested in improving wildlife habitat on their property. The workshop, titled "Wildlife Habitat Enhancement and Design" will be held Friday, March 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Highland Center in Monterey for a small admission fee

Additional information is available from Matt Yancey at the Rockingham County Cooperative Extension office in Harrisonburg, 540-564-3080, yancey@vt.edu. Participants need to register by March 21. Lunch and door prizes will be provided. During the morning session, several speakers will cover topics including soil sampling and fertility, wildlife food plots, designing and maintaining ponds, cost share assistance, and deer diseases.

The afternoon sessions will have two themes - wildlife habitat and pesticide applicator recertification. The sessions cover topics including values of specific trees for wildlife, timber harvesting as a wildlife enhancement tool, coyotes, grouse and turkey habitat, fire as a habitat enhancement tool, and enhancing habitat through the deer management assistance program.

The pesticide applicator recertification track includes impacts of invasive plants on wildlife habitat, forest insect pests, pesticide safety, and pesticide legal issues.

Co-sponsors of this workshop include the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia Department of Forestry, Virginia Tech, Virginia State University and the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Mountain District.
