Millboro Happenings
By Gina Hamilton

¦ Winners in the March Math Olympiad have been announced for Millboro Elementary School. Zach Brinkley was the elementary winner and Laura Haney was the middle school winner. This was the last Math Olympiad competition for the school year. Teacher Herb Hardbarger was pleased to report the results.

¦ Easter activities at Douthat State Park will be held the day before, on Saturday, March 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Discovery Center. The event will include craft projects and an Easter egg hunt for youngsters with different areas designated for different ages. For more details, call (540) 862-8100, e-mail Douthat@dcr.virginia.gov. The event is free.

¦ An area Relay for Life team will host Aunt Bea's Sunday Lunch on March 30 from noon to 6 p.m., at Goshen Presbyterian Church next to the library. The event will raise money for the American Cancer Society in its efforts to fight cancer and assist cancer patients. Relay team participants are members of the Parish of the Pastures Relay for Life team. The menu, for one price, will feature meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, biscuits, and fruit cobblers with ice cream.

A hands-on Easter project that children, especially, can enjoy, is making an Easter egg tree with decorated hollowed-out eggs. Little hands can help by poking small holes in the top and bottom of an egg and blowing the contents into a bowl for scrambled eggs. Decorations can range from using stick-on designs to gluing ribbons and strips of colored paper on an eggshell, or coloring the eggs with paints or markers. A tradition in Germany is to place very small cut branches from shrubs or trees in a vase inside to watch the leaves open in time for Easter. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton)
¦ Parents may want to mark the date of Friday, April 4, on their calendars to register children for kindergarten in Bath County. Registration at Millboro Elementary School will be held at 1:30 p.m. for children who will be five years old by September 30. Parents will need to bring a child's birth certificate, immunization record and social security number. For more information, call the school at (540) 839-5804, or (540) 997- 5452.

¦ Since Monday, March 17, is St. Patrick's Day, I remember the traditional Irish blessing a friend left on my computer at the office the evening I came back in to finish my work before I was to have surgery that would keep me home for six weeks:

May the road rise to meet you,

May the winds be always at your back,

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

The rain fall soft upon your fields,

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the hollow of His Hand.

I still have Tom's note, and now that he has passed on, I know this kind soul has found his Irish Heaven.
