| HOT SPRINGS - Members of the Virginia Association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America joined more than 220,000 members in celebrating National FCCLA Week, during the week of February 10- 16. This year's theme was "MADE: Making A Difference Everywhere."
During National FCCLA Week, members planned and carried out activities to address teen and societal concerns and show how family and consumer sciences education can help them achieve the ultimate leadership experience.
Bath County High School chapter participated throughout the week in several ways. During school announcements, Bethany Reese, club secretary, announced facts about the club. Club members raised money by delivering special candy bags on Valentine's Day. Morgan Ryder and Heather Riley dressed up as "love bugs" to deliver the Valentine's Day candy. All proceeds went toward the Feed the Children Campaign this year.
The club encouraged members to eat healthy snacks and turn off the television during dinner to get back in touch with family members. Members were encouraged to start an exercise program for themselves. Walking 15 minutes more a day makes a difference in their health and wellness. The club encouraged members to checkout the Bacova Wellness Center over the weekend.
The club sponsored a bingo social for the Mountain Crest Retirement residents. Residents were excited to come back to school and interact with teenagers. Club members played bingo, ate refreshments and spent an afternoon bonding with their neighbors. Plans are under way for another interaction, as it allows members to learn and have fun with a different age group. Retirement can be lonely for some so the members want to make them feel wel- come and learn more about the club.
The Feed the Children campaign profits will benefit the national outreach program. The goal is to present $200 at the State Leadership Conference in Virginia Beach.
FCCLA chapters will have the opportunity to show their commitment to community service in a unified effort for a worthy cause. Chapters will report on activities and/or make contributions on stage. Matt O'Conner and Brittany Markum will make the BCHS club presentation.
The state and national officers selected Feed the Children as the outreach project for 2008 and 2009. The total state goal is $10,000:
• $7,200 to fill a truck for distribution in Virginia during a time of disaster;
• $2,800 toward the national FCCLA's goal of filling 20 trucks.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by student members. It is the only Career and Technical Student Organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
