Free streambank willows available

WARM SPRINGS - The Mountain Soil and Water Conservation District is again offering, free of charge, locally grown willow cuttings for streambank stabilization projects.

The district established the willow nursery on a local farm several years ago so that adequate and affordable plant materials could be provided to area landowners. Two foot long cuttings will be harvested soon from the nursery, before the plants break bud. They can be easily planted by poking a hole in the streambank and inserting the cutting about 18 inches.

This type of willow, Streamco, was specifically developed at a USDA plant materials center for soil conservation. It will take root easily if there is enough moisture. Last year 25 local landowners responded to this offer and planted almost 2,797 cuttings.

Anyone interested in receiving willow cuttings to plant on their streambank can call the Mountain Soil and Water Conservation District at (540) 839-6642 or 1-800- 254-3854.
